Our penny loafer was created with two things in mind: versatility and comfort. It's the ultimate shoe for travel, given the ability to be paired with a sport coat or t-shirt and almost anything in between. We find ourselves wearing this shoe year-round—sockless with shorts/lightweight fabrics in the summer and with wool socks and denim through the winter.

Combining a forgiving upper leather and soft insole/outsole tannage, the Traveler Penny strikes the perfect balance of structure and support.

  • Goodyear-welt construction
  • Alexander last
  • Chromexcel from Horween
  • Handsewn moc-toe stitching
  • Full-grain kip leather lining
  • 360º flat welt
  • Vegetable-tanned leather insole and welts
  • Cork filler with steel shank
  • Butyl leather outsole (oil dipped for flexibility)

Every pair crafted in our factory on Xiamen Island, China

The Alexander last runs a half-size large. Customers typically order a half-size down from their average shoe size.

Traveler Penny Crimson Chromexcel

Made with

Goodyear-welt Construction

Renowned for its durability and ability to be resoled repeatedly, Goodyear-welt construction involves stitching a welt—a strip of leather—around the shoe's perimeter, creating a cavity. After filling the cavity with the shank and cork, the sole is attached, providing strength and water resistance. This construction method results in shoes that are not only long-lasting but also easily repairable, making them a timeless investment in quality craftsmanship.

Utilizing the

Alexander Last

Explicitly designed for loafers, the Alexander Last features the classic contours and higher sidewalls of a rounded casual-comfort loafer compared to its dressier counterparts. The Alexander Last offers a sleek profile while maintaining a generous toe box, allowing your forefoot generous amounts of room.

Reviews

Quality you can feel

"Received my first order. Shoe has a great build quality. Order 1/2 down, loafer has some heel slip but expected as sole and leather get broken in. Love the look of the shoe. Excited to see how they feel in a few months and breaking period ends."

Shoe looks incredible, but takes

"Shoe looks incredible, but takes several wears to truly break in and feel great."

Daniel G. (4/5)

Great customer service on resizing

"I ordered the same size as my Diesel Boots and had to downsize one full. GS made it easy and sent the new pair faster than I thought they would be able to. Very solid shoes, so much better than the ones I used to wear in high school. Outstanding."

Great Customer Service. . . . Poor design, bad fit.

"Awesome customer service. Love the look and color. Sizing is definitely a challenge. I wear many different loafers and these are by far the most poorly fit. Tried sizing down, tried inserts. Last thing I will try is a heal insert. Bottom line, the heal of this shoe is poorly designed. Just too much room, foot slides all over. Should have been more careful with my selection. Warnings everywhere online about sizing and I shouldn't have ignored them."

Delighted!!!

"These shoes are first class!! Coming from Aldens, I’m so delighted with the color, fit and look I’ve bought five more pairs in a variety of materials!! Also, seeing Grant Stone advertise in the monthly Porsche Panorama magazine has reinforced my views. Well Done, Grant Stone!!!"

William G. (5/5)

"Love these shoes! Only took a day or two to break in and become super comfortable"

Great loafers, be careful with the sizing

"The best looking penny loafers on the market. A perfect compromise between smart and casual. Excellent materials and build quality. Take care with the sizing. My brannock size is, annoyingly, right between 9. 5 and 10 -- D. I wear 10 in sneakers and either 9 or 9. 5 in boots, depending on the brand. For these loafers, I went down to 9D. and I was slipping right out of them. Despite being very careful when trying them on, I still managed to mark the right sole, so I couldn't exchange them. Insoles, tongue pads, and extra heel linings couldn't fix the issue. Thankfully I was able to sell them online. I tried 8. 5D. Perfect. So for me, one full size down from brannock is the sweet spot, and I didn't need to go wider (E) to account for the drop. They're snug but not at all tight, with an initial, tolerable amount of heel slip that disappeared once the soles broke in."

Justin (4/5)

Very happy with these loafers!

"These shoes look great - beautiful color and quality leather. Ease of exchanging for a different si2e. I wear nine in other dress shoes and an eight in these."

Jamie R. (5/5)

Beautiful loafers with a roomy heel

"Unfortunately I wasn't able to keep these because of fit issues but I was deeply impressed with the quality of these. I own Alden and Trickers and these were better than the Aldens and on par with the Trickers. That's saying a lot. So here's how these fit. I'm a 13 in sneakers an 11. 5 in my Alden Indy's (though maybe a 12 would be better) and a UK12 in all of my Trickers, though I wish they made a half size down. I got these in a 12. The toe box had ample room, just how I wanted it. My half orthotic fit just fine. The instep was pinching on my left foot (the bigger of the two) which is mostly due to my high arch and a bit of a bony protuberance. Unfortunately the heel slip was very bad for me. I have narrow heels, low volume narrow feet, but require wide toe splay due to neuroma. If the heel was much narrower these would have been a winner for me. But in terms of quality and style these are really excellent."

Nikolai L. (5/5)

I was hesitant to buy

"I was hesitant to buy these over chunky loafers since I wanted something more casual. I am so glad i bought these ones instead. They go with everything. The look great and the quality is second to none. The are not cheap but are a great investment. I recommend them to everyone."

Q&A

Back again. I love love love CXL. If my primary interest was in resistance to rain & water, would you be able to rank or compare how your tan saddle, suede and Castagno leathers hold up compared to CXL? Obviously CXL would be at the top, but wondering how suede and other materials would do as well. Not talking soaking rain, just some exposure to water. One more thing - do your Danite outsoles include a channel to protect the stitching or is the stitching exposed to the (potentially wet) ground? Thanks again.
Thanks for the question. As you mentioned, CXL would rank first given the amount of oil and wax in the tannage. We wear our suede, calf and saddle tan leather year round. When these articles get wet, it's best to let them dry naturally. Once they are dry, it is easier to address the dirty areas which is usually going to be the toe when walking in heavy rain. With full grain leather, using a conditioner occasionally will help keep the leather from becoming to dry,
Currently I wear 9.5d Gordon Rush Oxford/Loafers, 9E Allen Edmonds Oxfords, 9.5d Allen Edmonds Loafers, Sneakers 10d.
I would suggest the 9D in our collection.
What size should I be ordering? First pair of GS.
Feel free to list a few brands/sizes you like to wear. I would be happy to help figure the best size for you in our Grant Stone collection. You can always send us an email to discuss it as well.
Should I go for my typical Grant Stone size with these?
Yes, for most cases follow the same size. We have also seen others size down by a half a size for the best fit in the loafer. It depends if you prefer a snug or relaxed fit.
When will these be released?
We are shooting for March 13th!
