The Dark Oak Roughout article is the perfect combination of a heavier-weight leather with a soft, forgiving characteristic. This is a true roughout article, meaning it is full-grain leather, but leather is turned inside out, using the flesh side for the surface. Since the full-grain side is still intact, the leather has its structure and strength while offering the waxed suede texture for the unmatched character.

The Edward is a classic service boot. It has larger quarters and slightly different details than the Diesel, such as smaller hardware and an extra eyelet creating a dressier feel.

Variation is expected as this article is the antithesis of a cookie-cutter article.

Edward Boot Dark Oak Roughout

$395.00

Made with

Goodyear-welt Construction

Renowned for its durability and ability to be resoled repeatedly, Goodyear-welt construction involves stitching a welt—a strip of leather—around the shoe's perimeter, creating a cavity. After filling the cavity with the shank and cork, the sole is attached, providing strength and water resistance. This construction method results in shoes that are not only long-lasting but also easily repairable, making them a timeless investment in quality craftsmanship.

Our Leo Last

Derived from our experience fitting and developing various orthopedic-shaped lasts designed for specific foot shapes, the Leo features a moderate arch, heel control, medial support, and forefront freedom. It embodies a traditional welted shoe shape while prioritizing all-day support and comfort.

Our mission

Providing Excellent Service

Our priority has been putting customers in shoes that properly fit them and standing by our amazing products. Many customers have found they have been wearing an incorrect size for years. This has been lost in the market today. We offer the majority of our footwear in D, E, and EEE widths to provide well-fitting footwear.

We encourage customers to ask our team for assistance to ensure the best fit.

Beautiful Rough Outs

"These are my first pair of real leather boots. I was looking for new working boots that would be comfortable to be in all day, fit my wide feet, and that I wouldn’t have to bother cleaning/polishing regularly. I’ve had them for over a month now and they’ve been perfect. I think they look better and the brown slightly lighter than in the stock pictures, and I think it is a perfect combination with the rough out leather and dark lug sole. They were comfortable right away, and have gotten more comfortable and softer as I’ve worn them."

Great boot

"I really appreciate this boot, it broke in quickly, comfortable."

lyle w. (5/5)

My new GS Edward and Chelsea

"My grant stone edward boots arrived in perfect condition and with a perfect fit. The rough out leather promises a long life with a rich patina. I have only worn them indoors as I’m still breaking them in and it would be a shame to bring such beautiful boots outdoors into messy snow, ice and salt. I’m looking forward to many years of reliable, well-made, and comfortable footwear. This is my second pair of GS boots (first pair was Chelsea’s), and they are also a perfect fit and well made. Couldn't be happier with GS fit quality and service."

Joseph V. (5/5)

"Excellent boots, fit and finish are superb"

Reno (5/5)

All weather boot

"This is my favorite Grant Stone boot that I own. The fit is great (1/2 size down from Brannock), when compared to some of the other Grant Stone lasts. The Dark Oak Roughout is a great leather. The undertones of red, bleeding thru the dark brown, add a depth that most leathers can't match. The roughout begs to be worn in bad weather, and I am more than willing to oblige."

Scott A. (5/5)

"Well crafted and a good value.. they look just great"

Lee (5/5)

High quality but texture not exactly like the online photos

"The craftsmanship and materials of the boot are exceptional. The style and color are great too. The texture of the leather is unlike the photos so I returned them. The size of these boots runs about a half-size larger than what I am accustomed to buying, but that is probably because they do not come with a thick, cushioned insole."

Andy W. (4/5)

Ruggedly elegant

"I wanted a rugged boot for my first Grant Stone, a leather that could take a hit. This Dark Oak Rough Out meets the need very well. This is a substantial boot, each one a full 120 grams heavier than my size 6. 5 Iron Rangers (7 Brannock). I also like the wider welt to help keep scuffs at bay. Finally, I appreciate that Grant Stone boots appear to have taller quarters than most others. Notice how closely the eyelets tie together so there isn't a lot of tongue exposed. I haven't seen this mentioned, but it matters to me as I have a very high instep. Though these boots will see more dirt under foot than carpet or hardwood flooring, you could easily wear them to the office with a pair of gray flannel slacks and look dashing."

Lloyd S. (5/5)

"Absolutely superb build quality and feel. The roughout leather is gorgeous and rugged"

Reno (5/5)

Great Look

"I purchased this boot in 11. 5 EEE. The fit was good. I liked the texture of the leather. It was interesting. However, the boot felt heavy."

Q&A

I have just purchased the Edward boot in Roughout. What is the best way to care for these? I have read to use Neatsfoot oil but want to make sure that is OK. Thanks, Chris
We find that our Roughout from Charles F. Stead does not need that much upkeep. The leather is heavily impregnated with oils, so adding Neatsfeet would not be recommended.
How do you condition or treat rough out leather, any special care to keep it looking good.
Paul, thanks for reaching out. This leather is pretty easy to maintain because it doesn't require much. You can read more here - https://www.stitchdown.com/leather/roughout-vs-suede-differences-care/ Using a brush with firmer bristles to even out the scuffs/nap on the upper helps. You could always use some neutral conditioner on them when the upper gets really scuffed and dried out but honestly doesn't need anything for awhile in most cases.
Are these good to walk in snow compared to the diesel boots? Since the sole is different for traction.
Yeah these will perform a little better with regards to traction in the winter conditions. Similar in overall performance as the Diesel boot otherwise. Thanks for reaching out!
Is this waterproof?
This roughout article wouldn't be considered waterproof, but water-resistant due to the higher oil and wax content. If this leather becomes wet, letting it dry naturally will do the trick and not hurt the article.
