The Chelsea boot is steeped in both fashion and practicality. Originating in the mid-19th century in England, the first Chelsea boot was explicitly made for Queen Victoria. Her personal bootmaker, Joseph Sparkes Hall, created the first Chelsea boot – originally called Elastic Ankle Boots – in 1851 as a riding boot for the Queen. Yet, it took over a century for the Chelsea boot to arrive in the States. Becoming particularly fashionable during the swinging '60s in London, specifically in the Chelsea district of London, the Beatles brought their regal boots to the American masses.
The Josephine Chelsea boot – named after its inventor – remains essentially the same as it did for the Queen. Featuring elastic side panels and a sleek, ankle-high design, the Josephine Chelsea boot is perfect for those on the run, offering both style and convenience. "Got these for my wife as an anniversary present. She says they’re very comfortable and she’s been wearing them everywhere. A nice step up from her Blundstones, they’re dressier while still working as a casual shoe. She’s a US size 8-8. 5 and wears Australian women’s size 5. 5 Blundstones (which typically converts to a US women’s 8). Compared to those, the size 8. 5 Josephines are longer but narrower. She says they fit her perfectly."

"Quality: I bought these boots to replace a very old and well-loved pair of Blundstones that had seen better days and were a little too snug after my pregnancy. I did a ton of research and landed on these and I'm so glad I did! The quality is fantastic. When I took them out of the box I was almost taken aback by how beautiful they are. Fit: When I first put them on they were a little tighter than I expected, but when I tried a thinner sock and was amazed at how beautifully they fit my feet. I had a very helpful exchange with customer service about fit and definitely recommended reaching out if you have questions! They're still a little stiff but are breaking in beautifully with regular wear and I can tell they're going to be perfect in a few more weeks. I found them to be true to size pretty much exactly. If you plan to wear thick socks, definitely size up. I'm more likely to wear these with tights so I didn't, and I have a pair of shearling-lined boots so I won't be grabbing these on the coldest days. Style: The curve of the heel and the shine are beautiful. I chose these because they are so versatile -- I'm as likely to wear them with a skirt to a work event as I am to wear them to walk my dog on a rainy day, and on a lot of trips I'll be able to wear them to travel in without needing to pack another pair of shoes (note: they are pretty heavy so I wouldn't want to pack them but they're comfortable enough to wear on a plane). The shine and lack of a front pull tab make for a more refined look. I think men can get away with a slightly more rugged-looking boot than this in a business-casual setting, but I don't really feel like I can and I'm on the East coast in a field where things are slightly more formal. I was originally looking for something with a little more of a heel, but overall I'm happy with this look. Overall: These are excellent bootsim looking forward to wearing for many years! I've recommended Grant Stone boots to my husband -- in a reversal of what seems to be the trend, based on how hard it is to find boot reviews of women's boots from women and easy to find reviews of women's boots from men who bought their wives or girlfriends a pair to share their enthusiasm! I'm so happy with them I'm thinking of getting a pair of Grant Stone loafers next."
"I love these boots! They feel super sturdy, and are beautiful. They take a bit to break in as the leather was a bit stiffer and sturdier, but weren't uncomfortable. They are starting to crease on the toes, but will crease nicely."
